All LCD TVs are widescreen. So if you watch in the normal (4:3) video on widescreen (16:9), the image appears streched. This does not seem to bother some people, but to me it is not pleasant. So if you are like me, you will switch the TV mode to normal and then you will get two black bars on the left and right and your viewing area will be reduced. So in effect, a 26" TV will be like a 19" CRT while 32" will be like 26".

    Take the above into consideration.

    My recommendation is 32".

    thanks for the reply

let me get it straight... this TV is actually not for me this is for my parents and they will watch only movies and normal regional channels...
by buying 26'' i can save nearly 6-7 k , only my concern is if the viewing distance is 5-8 feet whether the viewing quality will be poor ...? if it is fine with blindfold i will go for 26''
now there are watching 21" CRT

At a distance of 5-8 feet, 26" is OK. But for better resale value, I will recommend 32".

What do guys think about this ?
    Benq 37" LCD TV

Maybe not the most well known company, but BenQ has good LCD monitors for the PC, would you recommend this over a low end 32" LG or samsung of the same price range ? What critical flaws can you find in the model above, if any?

Other than customer support, there may not be any issues.

In any case the LCD panel for most major manufacturers is made by a couple of OEMs. So there is no difference in panels, at least.

last week i brought LG LH 20 32" LCD , for 28 k and it is pretty good...
and am using videocon DTH , but i have some conserns like

1:while viewing football with 16:9 size the quality seems to be little less , the same case is applicable for some regiional channels but if i change the screen size to 4:3 or something less quality will be good..

what is the reason behind this may be my viewing distance is less or what..?

    The reasons are quite simple.

The standard size of the frame is 4:3. When it is stretched the quality is bound to suffer - just as a picture looks fuzzy when you zoom.

Why only sports channels or some particular channels you may ask? This is because sports and live action broadcast requires higher bandwidth. So sports are other such programs are compressed much more. As everyone knows higher the compression the lesser is the quality.

Indian DTH broadcasters are using 100 MB / hr as the bandwidth. They are stingy. Compare this with even a torrent movie download - it is 700 MB for a typical movie (1.5 hr to 2 hr) or 400+ MB/hr. Go a step further - compare this with DVD - it is 6~7 GB per movie - that is a whopping 3+ GB /hr. And to top it all, DTH claims to give DVD quality. What a load of utter bull$hit.

I hope I have explained. I will be happy to explain more, if you wish.

so that means , eventhough i brought any other LCD [any other brand / 26" or 32 "] the same problem will be there...?

    Exactly yaar..

when i played my DVD with new LCD , the quality was just awesome then how they are claming they are giving DVD quality..?

So this problem is facing by all the DTH users with big screen..?

    Yes. Some more some less.

Some DTH providers are using MPEG4 for compression. MPEG4 is more efficient in compression and allows more (content) in less (bandwidth). So using the same bandwidth (100 MB/hr), the MPEG4 can deliver more content.

Please note: MPEG4 is not better than MPEG2 - just more efficient. Ultimately the picture is still Standard Definition (SD) quality or 640x480 max. Using high compression, the picture quality is compromised. But MPEG4 will allow high compression with less loss.

Picture quality can be increased only by lesser compression or better resolution. By better resolution, I mean HD (1366x768) or Full HD (1920x1080).

They may be marginally better. But the fact remains that no DTH in India is true DVD quality!!!!

    thanks for the reply yaar....

    @just4kix --- u r really rocking in this forum...

    Thank you, jimmy.

At this moment, Sun is having HD DTH service. By the start of commonwealth games in New Delhi, many people are announcing HD services.

now it will be improved and all DTHs are going to provide DVD like pictures as there are coming HD channels..........

A small correction. HD transmission (true HD, that is, not upscaled) will be 1080i and at least (supposed to be) 6 times better than DVD.

But then again, all DTH providers in India claim that their regular (SD) service provides DVD like picture and CD like sound. Cannot be more further than the truth. The PQ of TataSky (possibly the best amongst the lot) is just slightly better than VHS (VCR tape).

I have been using a Moser Baer for the past year....everything looks good and there is no trouble as of now...picture quality is pretty good with a Reliance DTH!! Most importantly i would say its value for money TV!!
